Regional passes
In addition to the national Japan Rail Pass, there are also many regional passes. Below is a list of the main ones, divided by the different areas of Japan.

JR Hokkaido Pass
The Hokkaido Rail Pass is available in 5-, 7- and 10-day versions. You can use all trains in Hokkaido (except the Hokkaido Shinkansen) and many JR buses.
For children under 5 years old, the pass is free. From 6 to 11 years old there is a 50% reduction.
If purchased in Japan, the pass costs 1000 Yen more.

Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass
This pass is valid for 4 days and costs 9000 Yen (10000 Yen if purchased in Japan). The pass allows travel on all JR trains (non-reserved seats only) between Noboribetsu and Otaru as well as travel to Hokkaido-Iryodaigaku station (from Soen) and Iwamizawa station (from Shiroishi)
For children under 5 years old, the pass is free. From 6 to 11 years old there is a 50% reduction

Sapporo-Furano Area Pass
This pass is valid for 4 days and costs 10000 Yen (11000 Yen if purchased in Japan). The pass allows you to travel on all JR trains (non-reserved seats only) between Otaru, Sapporo, New Chitose Airport and the east to Furano, Biei and Asahikawa.
For children under 5 the pass is free. From 6 to 11 years there is a 50% reduction

JR Tokyo Wide Pass
The JR Tokyo Wide Pass is valid for 3 days and allows use of all trains in the Tokyo area, including the Tohoku Shinkansen (up to Nasu-Shiobara), the Joetsu Shinkansen (up to Gala Yuzawa, in the winter season otherwise up to Echigo-Yuzawa) and the Hokuriku Shinkansen (up to Sakudaira).
The Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded. Also included are some private lines including the JR/Tobu train between Shinjuku and Nikko, the Tokyo Monorail, the Fujikyu train to Kawaguchiko.

JR East Nagano Niigata Area Pass
This pass allows you to use all JR trains in the Tokyo Great Area, Nagano and Niigata prefectures and the Shonai region of Yamagata prefecture.
The pass is only available to foreign tourists and costs 27000 Yen and is valid for 5 consecutive days.

Hokuriku Arch Pass
This pass allows you to use all JR trains between Tokyo and Osaka on the Tokyo, Nagano, Toyama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka route. The Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tsuruga is included.
In addition to the cities listed above, transfers to Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports are included. In addition, you can use the Yamanote Line in Tokyo and reach Nara and Kobe from Kyoto/Osaka.
The pass can only be purchased by foreign tourists and costs 30000 Yen and is valid for 7 consecutive days.

Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass
This pass allows use of all JR trains between Nagoya, Takayama, Toyama (Ltd. Express Hida View). Shinkansen between Toyama and Tsuruga. Train between Tsuruga and Shin-Osaka (Ltd. Express Thunderbird). JR trains in the Osaka area (including the Loop Line) and train to Kansai airport (NOT available on Haruka). On all trains you cannot take reserved seats.
In addition to the trains, you can take the buses of the Nohi, Hokutetsu, Toyama Chitetsu and Kaetsuno companies that connect the cities of Kanazawa, Toyama and Takayama to Shirakawago and Gokayama.
The pass can only be purchased by foreign tourists and costs 19800 Yen and is valid for 5 consecutive days.

JR Hokuriku Area Pass and JR Kansai Hokuriku Area Pass
The JR Kansai Hokuriku Pass and the JR Hokuriku Area Pass cost 19000 Yen and 7000 Yen respectively.
The passes are valid for 7 and 4 consecutive days.
The first pass covers the Kansai area up to the Okayama, Hamasaka and Shingu area. Then it covers the area between Kanazawa, Toyama up to Joetsu Myoko and you can take the Shinkansen from Joetsu Myoko to Tsuruga and from Shin-Osaka to Okayama. It is also possible to reach Kanazawa from Osaka, Kyoto.
The second pass only covers the area from Kanazawa to Obama and Toyama to Kurobe. Also included is the Shinkansen between Kurobe Unazuki Onsen and Tsuruga.
For children under 5 years the pass is free. From 6 to 11 years there is a 50% reduction.

JR West All Area Pass
The JR West All Area Pass allows Shinkansen travel between Joetsumyoko and Tsuruga. Use the Thunderbird train from Tsuruga to Shin-Osaka.
Shinkansen (also Nozomi and Mizuho) between Shin-Osaka and Hakata (Fukuoka) are also included. You can also take most JR lines in Kansai and Chugoku. See the Official website for a map with all the lines included.
The pass lasts for 7 days and costs 26000 Yen.
Passes can be bought through authorised retailers or on the Official website.
For children under 5 years old the pass is free. From 6 to 11 years old there is a 50% reduction.

JR Kansai Area Pass and JR Kansai Wide Area Pass
The Kansai Area Pass is available in versions of 1, 2, 3 and 4 consecutive days. With this pass you can take JR trains in the Kansai area. You can use the Haruka train from Kansai Airport (non-reserved seats only). Shinkansen and Limited Express trains cannot be used.
The Wide pass, on the other hand, lasts for 5 consecutive days and the area of use is more extensive. Shinkansen (between Shin-Osaka and Okayama) and Limited Express trains can be used.

For children under 5 years the pass is free. From 6 to 11 years old there is a 50% reduction.

The Kansai Wide area excursion pass is valid for 3 consecutive days. Shinkansen (between Shin-Osaka and Okayama) and Limited Express can be used. The pass also covers the route to Toyama, Tottori, Kinosaki Onsen, Kii-Katsura.

Ise-Kumano-Wakayama Area Tourist Pass
This pass covers the area from Nagoya to Kii-Katsura.
It is valid for 5 consecutive days and gives the possibility to take all trains (including limited express trains, only non-reserved seats) and part of the Ise Railways in the Shizuoka area. Also included are some bus routes in various cities.
The pass costs 16500 Yen and can be purchased through authorised retailers, on the Official website or directly in Japan.

This pass is a combination of the Sanyo Sanin Pass of JR West and the Northern Kyushu Pass of JR Kyushu. The pass is valid for 7 consecutive days.

With the All Kyushu Area Pass you can use all JR trains on the island of Kyushu excluding Sanyo Shinkansen trains, night trains and JR Kyushu buses.
The Northern Kyushu Pass is similar to the other pass but limited to the northern part of the island up to Kumamoto, the Southern Kyushu Pass from Kumamoto on down
The All Kyushu pass is available in three versions 3, 5 and 7 days, the Northern pass is available for 3 and 5 consecutive days, while the Southern Pass is only available for 3 consecutive days.
There is also the 2-day Fukuoka Wide Pass at a price of 3060 Yen. This pass covers local trains in the Fukuoka and Hakata area.
