If you are a water sports enthusiast and adventurous, you cannot miss the opportunity to go kayaking on the island’s rivers. One of the most popular rivers is the Urauchi, but there are many other options, even on smaller rivers.
To go on a kayak excursion, you can contact one of the companies that specialise in this type of activity. Every river has at least one or two companies offering two-hour tours, with prices starting at around 4,000 yen per person. Remember that bookings must be made in advance.
If, on the other hand, you are already experienced and prefer to move independently, there is also the possibility of hiring kayaks without a guide. This way, you can enjoy an even more intense and personalised experience, exploring the rivers at your own pace.
Beaches
The island of Iriomote is a perfect destination for lovers of the sea and pristine beaches. Here you will find numerous beaches offering snorkelling, swimming and diving. However, it is important to remember that most of these beaches have no public facilities and some of them can only be reached by boat.
Of all the beaches in Iriomote, one of the most famous is Hoshizuna no Hama, which means ‘star sand beach’ in Japanese. The name comes from the fact that the grains of sand are shaped like small stars. However, interestingly, this sand is actually composed of the skeletons of small single-celled organisms. The beach also offers the opportunity to snorkel and swim in the crystal-clear surrounding waters. There are no public facilities on the beach, except for parking. Admission is free, as is parking.

Yamaneko Museum
The Yamaneko Museum plays a key role both as a tourist attraction and as a refuge for the Yamaneko Iriomote, a species of wild cat unique to this area. These wild cats are often injured in traffic accidents and are subsequently rescued and cared for in the museum.
Unfortunately, to preserve the tranquillity and habitat of the cats, it is not possible to see them in person. However, visitors can admire them via a live video broadcast of the cats in their natural environment. In addition to the Iriomote Yamaneko, the museum also displays other animals found on the island, providing an educational and engaging experience for visitors.
For those who do not speak Japanese, this is not a problem. Explanations in English can be found throughout the museum, allowing you to learn more about these fascinating animals and the surrounding ecosystem.

Taketomi Island
Taketomi Island is only 5 square kilometres in size and is famous for its characteristic red-tiled roofs and beautiful white sandy beaches. The journey time depends on the type of ferry you choose. Fast ferries take only 10 minutes to arrive at your destination, while those that also carry cars take about 15 minutes. Choose the option you prefer based on your preference of travel time and how you wish to discover the island.
Once you arrive in Taketomi, you can explore the island at your leisure. One of the most common options is to tour the island on foot, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Taketomi’s landscapes and relaxed atmosphere. However, if you prefer a faster means of transport, you can rent a bicycle at a cost of 300 yen per hour or 1500 yen per day. This will allow you to cover more distance and admire even more of what the island has to offer.

Wagon trip
