Nagasaki
The city of Nagasaki is located on the west coast of the island of Kyushu, the third largest in Japan. With an eventful history, the city has been the focus of numerous events that have shaped the country’s history. One of the best known periods is that of European colonial expansion in Japan, symbolised by the Sankakuwan torii and the Ōura Catholic Church, two of the city’s main attractions.
Nagasaki’s cityscape is a balance of traditional Japanese architecture and Western buildings constructed by foreigners during the colonial period. The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum is dedicated to the memory of the tragedy that struck the city at the end of World War II.
Other places of interest in Nagasaki include Nagasaki Castle, the Hot Spring Spa and Glover Park, where colonial buildings that once belonged to a famous British businessman have been turned into museums. Finally, the Nagasaki fishermen’s market is a place to enjoy fresh seafood and traditional local dishes.
